[ Delhi rain update – Schools shut due to heavy rain, Delhi gov. issued red alert ]
Heavy rain poured down in Delhi on Wednesday, bringing a mix of relief and trouble. While the showers provided respite from the sweltering heat, they also caused significant disruption. Mayur Vihar in East Delhi recorded the highest rainfall, with 119 mm falling in just three hours.
On Wednesday, the weather department’s forecast missed the mark again. Despite issuing a yellow alert, the day was marked by intense sunshine and oppressive humidity, causing discomfort throughout the city. By evening, the weather shifted, with areas across Delhi experiencing varying levels of rainfall, from light to heavy showers. The downpour led to waterlogging and traffic jams in many parts of the city.
Late Wednesday night, Delhi government minister Atishi took to the social media platform X to inform the public that, due to the heavy rain on Wednesday and the forecast for more rain on Thursday, all government and private schools in the capital would remain closed.
Incident happened due to rainfall:
Three individuals were shocked close to Gurgaon’s IFFCO Chowk metro station after heavy downpours hit the public capital on Wednesday night. The occurrence happened around 10 PM when the three men, swimming through water, came into contact with a lowered live wire. This awful occasion brought the day’s downpour related loss of life to five. Prior to night, a lady and her child had suffocated in an open channel in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Phase 3.
Schools shut due to heavy rain:
Due to the heavy rainfall, the Delhi government decided to close schools on Thursday, August 1. Not only government schools but also all non-public schools were announced closed today subsequent to waterlogging and traffic growls in a few regions in Delhi. Waterlogging stifled traffic in key regions like ITO, Minto Scaffold, Pul Prahladpur Rail line Underpass, MB Street, Dhaula Kuan, Mathura Street, Sarita Vihar Metro Station, the carriageway from Moolchand towards Chirag Dilli, Gaffar Market, areas of Jangpura, Anuvrat Marg, Sadar Bazar.
Red Alert Gave:
After the city sustained 100 mm of downpour in only one hour yesterday, the India Meteorological Division (IMD) gave a high red alert for the whole Delhi-NCR locale on Wednesday night. The IMD cautioned of moderate to weighty downpour or tempests, joined by breezy breezes with speeds going from 30 to 50 km each hour.
